1 THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF MA-TOV DAY CAMP Summer 2011 תש עא July 22, 2011 Volume XXVII, Issue 4 Upcoming Events: Tues, July 26 Carnival Day Nitzanim Late Night BG1-3, B1, G1 Wed, July 27 Trip Day Newark Bears or Maritime Aquarium Wear your MA-TOV shirts! Thurs, July 28 Sports Fan Day dress in your favorite sports outfit Tues, Aug 2 Petting Zoo and Pony Rides Wed, Aug 3 Ma-Na-Im Trip wear your Ma-Tov shirt Hiking Trip Thurs, Aug 4 Friendly -Re ut Theme Day Our two Olympic size pools are the coolest destination in camp! Whether it s instructional swim, free swim or splashing around with friends, campers love their time in the water. Campers have already made great progress in instructional swim. BG s, who started timidly on the pool steps, are now found splashing in the shallow water while older campers enjoy swimming in the deep end. Many are seen doing laps across the length of the pool and all are seen with smiles! Parents, please ask your child if they would like to bring goggles to camp. Many children enjoy swimming with goggles, especially when diving for a favorite game of retrieving items from the bottom of the pool! Just as we were about to finish off our month learning about Tuv Ha aretz, who should show up to rain on our parade? The evil Shmenderson! But, you ll be happy to hear he was no match for Ma-Tov campers! With ingenuity efficiency and creativity, our campers followed Shmenderson s clues. They faced challenges at every turn, but persevered to return the lost pieces of the Israel map to their rightful place. And when they weren't chasing the dastardly villain, Ma-Tov campers enjoyed relay races and games on a giant map of Israel. It was a day burning with excitement and sizzling with learning about Tuv Ha'aretz.
2 Wow! What a great time the boys in B11-22 had at our late night. The sights and sounds of children having so much fun was a pleasure to observe. The boys loved having the entire camp to themselves. They swam in the pools, played a game of dodgeball led by the sports staff, and had a delicious dinner. They completed the evening by roasting yummy marshmallows over the campfire. Though exhausted, the boys had a great time!! When Ma-Na-Im went to Keansburgh s Amusement Park, we decided not to go on the rides.so we could spend the whole time in the water! We used the water slides, tubes, and had a body mat slide. The whole playground was filled with water. When we needed a break, we went back to the lazy river to cool down. The Ma-Na-Im girls who chose to stay in camp and not go to the water park were treated to a special in-camp activity. The girls made their own sushi out of fruit roll ups, rice krispes, marshmallows and other fun treats! The best part was eating their creations.
3 What fun to be enjoying music with many talented and enthusiastic campers and counselors! Our youngest groups have enjoyed some of the oldies-butgoodies like Happy and you know it, ABC, Alef bet vet, Yeled is a boy, Wheels on the bus, and Hinei rakevet. Some of our favorite songs are Lukshon Kugel, Pharoah Pharoah, Baruch Hagever, Minyan Man, the Nigun, Shabbos Yerushlayim and songs about Israel. We sing a large assortment of Ma-Tov tunes and especially our Ma-tov camp song. Freeze dancing and use of musical instruments enhances our time together. Our colorful, beautiful new music booklets make music sessions even more meaningful. The campers all enjoy the opportunity to sing using a microphone. Campers especially enjoy singing together at our Shabbos Oneg as we share the Ruach with everyone. In order to give the campers an understanding of what we were commemorating on the recent fast day, we ended the day with a meaningful program. First, campers sat within the walls of the old city of Yerushalayim and watched as counselors acted out scenes of Sinat Chinam- the baseless hatred that led to the destruction of the 2nd Beit Hamikdash. Then, they saw the Roman soldiers (the fearful B45) lay siege to the city and break down the walls. Next, we sang some slow songs about remembering Yerushalayim and praying for its rebuilding. The program closed with an exciting story told by Rabbi Ben Resnick. The campers have learned about the customs for the three weeks and have a firm understanding about the mood and the goals of this important time period.

Among the top three requests are Turkish Kiss, Cotton Eyed Joe, and Yesh Lanu Tayish. The girls also have fun playing movement games of freeze dance, musical hoola hoops, and huggy bear. Campers are given a chance to relax and move more slowly in the heat as they go under the Limbo stick, and we always warm up before each lesson with stretching exercises. It s been a great start, and we re looking forward to dancing our way through the summer!
